Benefits of Cooking as a Family

This summer when kids are home from school get them involved in the kitchen to learn lifelong cooking skills. Teaching moments with young children could be as easy as assembling a healthy snack. Teens should learn basic cooking before leaving for college. For example: boiling, sautéing, and safe knife handling skills will add variety to the Easy Mac college diet. The more often someone is exposed to cooking the likelihood of applying it to their adulthood increases. As a parent, if you are not the most skilled in the kitchen that is ok! Learning with your child can be a fun activity to spend time with each other. Take a sensory journey during your cooking and eating experience to practice mindfulness and get in tune with your hunger cues and cravings. Lack of time is always an excuse not to cook, so some tips would be preparing certain steps of the recipe the night before, sticking to 30 minute meals or less and finding recipes with only a few ingredients. Save some money by being your own chef and your mind can be at ease as what ingredients you are feeding your children. Following a recipe and learning how to complete a task can build confidence. Cooking is especially helpful for those struggling with depression, anxiety and eating disorders. Family meals nourish the body and stimulate the mind
