Wait...I Can Eat TOO Healthy?

As a dietitian I counsel clients about how nutrition impacts the body & mind. I specialize in eating disorders and a common trait I see popping up is Orthorexia. This term is not a medical diagnosis, however more professionals are using it. Orthorexia is an unhealthy obsession and relationship with food having to be healthy. Confusing messages are out there as the media is focusing on “clean eating”.

Of course I want to encourage my clients to eat more vegetables, but I also want clients to enjoy how food tastes. Eating is part of our culture. When the body is deprived from it's favorite foods, it can spark overeating and binging. Red flags include: the inability to be flexible with food, suddenly becoming vegan, consuming only organic or gluten free foods, eliminating processed foods and avoiding eating at restaurants. One such example is seen when children and adolescents remove vital food groups from their diet such as dairy. This puts them at greater risk for osteopenia and later osteoporosis due to deficient intake of both calcium and vitamin D which developing children need.

If you or someone you know is suffering from an eating disorder or disordered eating I am currently accepting clients on inside the Growth & Recovery Counseling Center. Located on 7747 Mitchell Blvd, Suite B in Trinity, FL.
