CEDRD Supervision

#CEDRD is a new buzzword for eating disorder professionals. CEDRD stands for certified eating disorders registered dietitian. This is a specialist credential that involves intense readings, coursework, hands on requirements and most importantly supervision. Therapists receive supervision throughout their career as a no brainer. Dietitians don’t really do that. However, a CEDRD goes above and beyond to seek supervision from an experienced dietitian to help coach them along with nutrition interventions and counseling techniques.

In the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist community there is a big push to become a specialist. I became a CEDRD through the organization International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (iaedp). The CEDRD is also recognized by our mother ship the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics. Hooray!!!

I actually stumbled across this credential by accident when I was interning for the National Eating Disorder Association. I had no idea this was thing because let’s face it, at the undergraduate level eating disorders are not discussed. The steps and qualifications sounded daunting at first but it was also comforting to know I had a professional vision that was right for me. I am proud of my #CEDRDPower and that other clinicians can turn to me for guidance, tips or referrals. I’m a non diet dietitian that likes to keep it real. There is no such thing as perfect eating, so embrace the gray. I recently guest spoke for a binge eating group and I explained the dietitian’s role and they were shocked that I don’t care about weigh-ins or weights. Yes, I do weigh my patients if need be, but its not a ritual that my clients must do every time they see me. As nutrition therapists we need to stick together with ditching the food police and weight loss routine.
